Gifting Property Before You Die

The simplest way to dispose of your assets on your death is to gift them to whom you wish to have them before you die.

We have all made gifts in our life—birthdays, Christmas, weddings—so we all know what a gift is; it is an unconditional transfer of property to another. As we get in to our old age, we sometimes think about who may want certain items of our personal property such as jewellery, musical instruments, china, photographs and the like.

There is great joy in giving the gift while you are alive. The trick is being prepared to part with the item, and the uncertainty about the time of our death.

For those of us that are lucky enough to live in to our late 80's, that might be the time to consider gifting certain items to those you wish to have them.

Some people are just not comfortable with gifting before death, but for those that are, it provides the pleasure of making the gift, and avoids the possibly of your intentions being misunderstood or ignored on your death.
