Martin Sanderson
Martin is a partner at Robson, O’Connor LLP, heading a robust solicitor’s practice primarily focused on estate and incapacity planning, estate administration, and assisting businesses with their legal needs.
Outside of the office, he is proud to be a part of a community with so much civic engagement. He is presently acting as the vice president of the Ladysmith Chamber of Commerce and is an enthusiastic supporter of several wonderful local community organizations, including the Ladysmith Rotary and the Arts Council of Ladysmith.
Martin attended the University of British Columbia where he majored in both psychology and philosophy. In his time at UBC, he focused his studies on cross-cultural psychology and the social psychology of moral decision-making. After UBC, Martin moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia to attend the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University, and in 2014, received his Juris Doctor degree.
After graduation from Dalhousie, Martin first worked as a research assistant with Dalhousie’s Health Law Institute, after which, he joined the in-house legal team at Canada’s largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (“CAMH”) in Toronto, as a student-at-law.
Martin then returned to BC in early 2017 to marry the love of his life, set down roots on Vancouver Island, and join the team at Robson, O’Connor LLP as an associate. Then, after several happy years as an associate, Martin signed on as a partner in 2020. This was right in time for a global pandemic, a dynamic experience that rapidly accelerated the firm’s technological modernization.
Martin has a keen interest in the intersection of mental health and the law. During his time at Dalhousie he obtained a specialization certificate in Health Law and Policy and conducted extensive research into various approaches to involuntary psychiatric treatment, both across Canada and around the world. Here in BC, he is involved in a program that provides advocacy for individuals who have been involuntarily admitted to psychiatric care under BC’s Mental Health Act.
At Robson, O’Connor LLP, Martin takes great pride in providing friendly accessible assistance to the community. He spends a large portion of his time helping community members with their wills, estate, and incapacity planning. He also spends a great deal of time helping executors obtain grants of probate and navigate the responsibilities and risks associated with administering an estate, in addition to assisting clients with business and family law matters.
When he is not buried in a book, Martin loves getting out in nature, camping, hiking, biking through the woods, and kayaking whenever he gets the chance.
Robson, O’Connor LLP offers a broad range of legal services, from buying or selling a home, refinancing, wills, estate planning, estate administration, corporate and commercial matters, family law, and many things in-between.
Paul, Martin, and an experienced team of five highly skilled paralegals and legal assistants, take great pride in providing the community with quality local legal services in a compassionate and neighbourly manner.
